Riyadh’s logistics and storage sector keeps growing, and so does the challenge of keeping large warehouses workable in extreme heat. Under a metal roof in a Riyadh summer, internal temperatures can climb far above outdoor air, which affects workers, stock and equipment. The right HVAC approach depends on what you store and how the building is used.
Start With the Requirement
- General storage: ventilation to remove heat, with spot cooling for people and pick areas.
- Temperature-sensitive goods (food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, electronics): controlled temperature zones, sometimes with humidity control and monitoring.
- Cold storage: refrigerated chambers and freezers; see our refrigeration and cold storage services.
- Offices, mezzanines and control rooms: conventional comfort air conditioning.
Cooling and Ventilation Options
Mechanical ventilation
Roof extract fans with low-level intake louvres remove hot air that collects under the roof. In Riyadh’s dry climate this is the minimum for any warehouse, and it also helps with fume and dust removal.
Evaporative cooling
Riyadh’s low humidity makes evaporative coolers effective and economical for large open spaces where moderate cooling is enough. They need water, good water treatment and regular pad and tank cleaning, and they are less effective on humid days.
Spot cooling
Directing cooled air to loading bays, packing stations and pick zones keeps people comfortable without cooling the whole volume.
Full air conditioning
Where goods need a controlled temperature, packaged units, VRF or a chilled water plant serve the warehouse through ducted air or air handling units. For large conditioned volumes, see our guide to air-cooled chillers in Riyadh heat.
Riyadh-Specific Design Points
- Roof insulation and reflective roofing reduce heat gain more cheaply than extra cooling capacity.
- Dust: filtered intakes, sand trap louvres and accessible filters, with cleaning after sandstorms.
- Loading docks: dock seals, strip curtains or fast-acting doors limit hot air infiltration into conditioned zones.
- Fire and smoke control: HVAC and ventilation must be coordinated with sprinklers, smoke extract and Civil Defense requirements from the start. See our firefighting systems services.
- Energy: variable-speed fans, zoning and BMS scheduling cut running costs in buildings with long operating hours.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is evaporative cooling enough for a Riyadh warehouse?
For general storage and staff comfort it often is, thanks to the dry climate. For goods with strict temperature limits, mechanical cooling is usually needed.
Can you add cooling to an existing warehouse?
Yes. We survey the building, roof, power supply and storage requirements, then propose ventilation, spot cooling or full HVAC accordingly.
