Air-Cooled Chillers in Riyadh Heat: High-Ambient Selection and Derating

Industrial chillers installed by Saudi ProTech

Air-cooled chillers are the default choice for many Riyadh buildings because they need no cooling tower and no make-up water. But Riyadh summers are among the hottest of any major city in the region, and a chiller selected on standard catalogue conditions can lose a large share of its capacity exactly when the building needs it most. This guide explains how to select air-cooled chillers that actually perform in Riyadh.

Why Standard Ratings Are Not Enough

Manufacturers commonly publish air-cooled chiller capacity at an ambient air temperature of 35°C. In Riyadh, outdoor temperatures above 45°C are normal in summer, and the air entering a condenser on a hot rooftop is often hotter still. As condenser air temperature rises, condensing pressure rises, compressor power goes up and cooling capacity goes down. Some units will trip on high pressure before they reach the hottest afternoon of the year.

Five Selection Rules for Riyadh

1. Ask for performance at your real design ambient

Request certified capacity and power input at the project’s design ambient, typically 46–50°C for Riyadh rooftops, not at 35°C. Compare chillers on that basis only.

2. Specify a true high-ambient model

High-ambient versions use larger condenser coils, higher-rated fans and controls designed to unload rather than trip at extreme temperatures. Confirm the maximum operating ambient in the submittal.

3. Allow for recirculation and rooftop heat

Chillers placed too close together, against walls or inside screens re-breathe their own hot discharge air. Follow the manufacturer’s clearances and model the layout so condensers receive the coolest air possible.

4. Plan for dust

Riyadh dust and sandstorms clog condenser coils and cut capacity. Specify coil protection and accessible coils, and include frequent coil cleaning in the chiller maintenance plan.

5. Judge efficiency at part load

Most hours of the year are not peak hours. Inverter-driven screw or scroll chillers with good part-load efficiency (IPLV) usually cost less to run over the year than fixed-speed machines with similar peak ratings. Our commercial chiller selection guide explains IPLV in more detail.

Redundancy: Don’t Size to the Last Ton

For offices, hospitals and data-sensitive spaces, split the load across two or more chillers with N+1 redundancy, so one machine can be serviced or fail without losing cooling. Multiple smaller chillers also run more efficiently at the part loads typical of Riyadh’s spring and autumn.

When Air-Cooled Is Not the Right Answer

For very large, continuously loaded plants, water-cooled chillers can be significantly more efficient, but they need cooling towers, water treatment and a reliable water supply. Some office buildings are better served by VRF; see VRF vs chiller for Riyadh office buildings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much capacity does an air-cooled chiller lose in Riyadh summer?

It depends on the model and condenser design, so always check the manufacturer’s certified data at your design ambient. The loss compared with the 35°C catalogue rating can be substantial, which is why high-ambient selection matters.

Can I add shading or misting to improve performance?

Shading equipment areas and, on some models, adiabatic pre-cooling can help, but they must follow the manufacturer’s guidance and water quality limits to avoid scaling the coils.

How often should coils be cleaned in Riyadh?

Check monthly in summer and after dust storms, and clean whenever inspection shows build-up, not only on a fixed schedule.
